Project #2 - Winter Rose

I figured I better post this before I fall asleep on my computer and forget (again!) hahaha. I had a request to take a picture of snow on some bushes or leaves or something. I was almost prepared to go hike up a mountain to get to where the snow hadn't melted yet, But then last week, we had a wonderful dump of snow! yay! So when I got home for my lunch break, I rushed outside to take this pic of snow on the rosebush, before it all melted again! Good thing I did, cause it rained and rained and all the snow is gone now.
Keep all the requests and suggestions coming. And if I have to climb a mountain for you, I'll do it! All the bears are still sleeping right now anyways, hehe =)

Project #1 (of 52)

STUDIO SHOT - Since I started out as a hobby photographer almost 9 years ago now, studio work has always intimidated me. Partly because I could never afford all the big "fancy" studio lights and equipment other Pro photographers use. But also partly because being a self-taught student of this art, it has taken painstaking hours of trial and error to get the right setup for whatever final image I'm trying to achieve. I determined that this year I would begin my first project of Project 52 with my long-time challenge with studio lighting. So here it is! A friend of mine offered to be the victim... uh, I mean model (heehee) and I even tried my hand at makeup artistry! Yep, her makeup was done by little ol' me!

I figured hey, I dabble in a bit of acryclic and oil painting for fun, so painting on a face couldn't be too hard could it? It was actually alot harder than that! I have always held a strong respect for makeup artists, especially after watchign them work on some of the shoots I've been on,, but I now have an even bigger appreciation for all the hard work they do! Whew! I was actually quite pleased with the way it turned out, I may even consider trying that look out on myself the next time I have a big night out planned, haha .

All in all, it was a total blast. Here are a few more pics, some "behind the scenes' footage for ya. Nobody was around to snap a pic of any of my crazy acrobatic perches atop the ladder I used to get a few shots haha. Yes I go all out to shoot my subjects. I've even been known to hang off the side of a tower of hay bales to get my shot! haha.

So there ya have it, project #1 of 52! Since it wasnt posted until the beginning of week 2 (oops) I will post project #2 pretty quick here also. But for now, you got to see the final image as well as a few pics of my lil' adventure I had in getting the pic!

Starting New & Project 52

Happy new year everyone!!!!!
New Years is one of my FAVORITE holidays because it means the ending of one chapter and the beginning of another, No matter how 2010 was for you (mine had equal parts of the good, the bad and the ugly, hehehe) this is when you say goodbye to all the hurts and frustrations of the past year and leave them right there in the past where they belong. A new year is a new beginning. That means new adventures, new people to meet, and new challenges to take on and projects to accomplish!

Which leads me to my inspired project for this coming year. I'm calling it PROJECT 52. Each week I will tackle a new photographic challenge, and then post the finished image on my blog with a short desription of my adventures in tackling that week's challenge.
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! This is where YOU (yes, you!) come in. I want to hear project challenge suggestions from all of YOU. Just post a comment below my blog here, or on my facebook page, with ideas you have on what you"d like to see me take on as a challenge. Waterfalls? A particular sports action shot? A close-up of a bumblebee? (That last one was actually kinda scary, I dont like being up close and personal with bees, hehehe)
So go ahead and dream up some fun project ideas you'd like to see, and I'll do the same, and we'll see just what kinda of crazy adventures this new project takes me on!

Back in Business, Baby!

Although I usually steer clear of Boxing Day sales and their ridiculously rowdy shoppers (not to be confused with the ridiculously INSANE Black Friday shoppers) I had an important mission this year: REPLACE MY CAMERA!
As some of you know, my camera and all my gear ( and my laptop) had been stolen during a break in at my house back in the summer and while Telus had replaced my laptop, I still had no camera. So after months of trying to scrape together whatever I could possibly set aside (and a generous donation from my family to my "camera fund") I braved the crowds to hunt for a good Boxing Day deal on a new camera and YAY! I found one!
So my camera and I are safe and sound back at home, and I am ready to start the new year out with a new camera and some great new adventures! And yes, this pic that I posted here is hopefully the last one taken from my cellphone for awhile, hehe =)

LOOK WHAT I GOT FOR MY BIRTHDAY!

Besides the oodles of homemade gifts my sons showered me with today ( I love them!) I wanted to share with you a particular item I got for my birthday this year - a pair of beautiful feather earrings, made for me by a girl in a local coffee shop! I admired the one she was wearing and when she said she made it herself I immediately placed a request! These handmade beauties are each one-of-a-kind originals ( she never makes the exact same pair twice) and just so you know, THERE WAS NO HARMING OF BIRDS IN THE MAKING OF THESE EARRINGS! They are made of 100% moulted feathers from bird sanctuaries. (She has a gorgeous orange parrot feather earring I have my eye on still, haha)

Besides being beautiful and unique, there is another reason these earrings are special to me. Do you know why birds moult their feathers? Becuause once a feather is matured (come to end of its life cycle) it is a dead structure. It becomes worn down and needs to be replaced. Healthy feathers grown in their place, necessary not only for controlling body temperature and keeping out moisture, but for proper flight.

People carry around dead feathers too, it's called "baggage." You all know what I'm talking about! And we walk around hanging on to all these dead feathers, and wonder why we can't ever seem to get off the ground! It can be extremely difficult letting go of the dead weight that is holding you down - believe me when I say I've been there! - but eventually you have to come to realize that's exactly what it is: dead weight holding you back from soaring the way you were meant to. It may have been a part of you in the past, but it's purpose has been fulfilled, it's life-cycle is over. And in order for healthy feathers to grow, the old ones MUST GO!

Feathers are meant to lift you OFF the ground, not drag you down in it!

As we are nearing the end of 2010, I encourage you to please, [PLEASE don't bring any "old feathers" into the new year with you! Let the new year bring new feathers, new opportunities and new people, and may your hearts finally get back to soaring freely the way they were meant to!

If you find you need a reminder to keep you moulting all those old "feathers", buy yourself a pair of earrings like I did, I'll let you know who to contact!

FREEDOM TO CELEBRATE

Christmas holidays are a time to celebrate, a time for reunions with loved ones, family and friends. It astounds me then, that even though christmas comes just a month and a half after Remembrance day, so many people forget the REASON we have the freedom to celebrate with our loved ones, or celebrate anything at all for that matter, is because of the men and women in service overseas who fight to give us that very freedom. OH, CHRISTMAS TREE ...

Last night the kids and I decorated our tree!

It took us all week to decorate it due to a shortage of ribbon ) we had to make a run to the store to get more) and busy schedules (homework and music lessons, and my office at work had a decorating party too). But here she is, all ready for the holidays. At least that makes one of us, hehe.

My dearly loved cellphone, whom I lovingly named "Buttons" suddenly realized the other day that her warranty had expired not long ago, so she randomly threw a hissy fit and went all psycho on me! Luckily I managed to talk my providers into a brand new cell phone for FREE! I also tweaked my plan, and I have a much better deal than I had before. (the trick is simply to not take no for an answer with these guys) . So "Buttons 2.0" and I are going to continue our Cellphone Photography adventures together, and I thought I'd start with the first one of my tree!

May your trees be fancy and your cellphones be sturdy, hehehe
